FAQs

Silver wine coasters gained popularity in the late 18th century during the Georgian era, designed to protect polished dining tables from condensation and spills while bottles were passed around the table after dinner.

Traditional wine coasters typically feature a hallmarked sterling silver or silver-plated rim combined with a turned wooden base, often mahogany or oak, featuring a baize or felt underside to prevent table scratching.

Authentic pieces are identified by hallmarks stamped onto the silver rim indicating the metal standard, makers mark, assay office, and date letter, alongside traditional construction methods like turned wooden inserts.

These items can be utilised on a bar cart, dining table, or sideboard to hold bottles, or repurposed to display small candles and decorative objects in a contemporary setting.

Silver rims should be maintained using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish applied with a soft cloth, while wooden bases require dusting and protection from excessive moisture.
