Description

This large loving cup is made of Old Sheffield Plate and has beautiful engraved detailing. This large tactile piece has no makers marks but dates to the late 18th Century. With two blank cartouches.

In good condition with minor copper bleed to raised edges and engraving. Slight ripple to rim.

Weight approx 533g.

Height approx 17cm

Span approx 23cm

Diameter at rim approx 12.5cm

Old Sheffield Plate is a composite material made by fusing a layer of silver to a base of copper, produced primarily from the mid-18th century until the introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

Artisans fused sterling silver sheets onto copper ingots under high heat and rolled them together, then hand-shaped the sheet metal, soldered components such as handles, and hand-engraved the surface ornamentation.
