Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita and shipped from the port of Imari, primarily during the Edo period. It is traditionally characterised by its distinctive palette of underglaze blue and iron red, frequently accented with gold.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay, glazed, and hand-painted. The manufacturing process involves firing the porcelain body first, applying underglaze cobalt blue, glazing, firing again, and finally adding iron red and gold details in subsequent lower-temperature enamel firings.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related wear such as minor footrim abrasion, slight glaze imperfections, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, and iron-spurring marks from the kiln. The weight, feel of the glaze, and traditional pigment tones are key indicators of period authenticity.

An Imari plate can be displayed as a focal point mounted on a wall, placed on a stand upon a sideboard, or integrated into a curated tablescape. Its rich palette complements both traditional and modern spaces by adding a layer of historical texture and global sophistication.

Antique porcelain should be hand washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent when necessary, avoiding harsh scrubbing or ultrasonic cleaners. Never place antique ceramics in a dishwasher, and display them out of direct sunlight to protect enamel and gilt details.
