Description

A handsome antique 19th century camphor wood campaign chest dating from circa 1870. It has brass strap work and brass corners and it has useful brass carry handles to the sides. In beautifully figured camphorwood with good colour and patina, the top is inscribed BRUST, probably a sea campaign chest, but would now make a wonderful coffee table.

A campaign chest is a type of modular furniture designed to be easily dismantled and transported, commonly used by British military officers during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These pieces were typically constructed from durable tropical timbers such as camphorwood or mahogany, featuring recessed brass handles, reinforced corners, and dovetail joints to withstand rigorous travel.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate hand-cut dovetailing, solid brass hardware with natural patina, maker marks, and characteristic insect-repelling aromatic timber.

It functions effectively as a coffee table or a storage trunk in a living room, adding historic character and texture to contemporary design schemes.

Maintenance requires dusting with a dry lint-free cloth and occasionally treating the timber with appropriate natural waxes to prevent the wood from drying out while preserving the finish.
