Description

This is a Georgian, English colour twist wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a colour twist stem consisting of a pair of opaque white corkscrews edged on the insides in translucent ruby-red, outside a pair of opaque white spiral tapes. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14.5 cm (5.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a distinct shear mark to the edge of the foot where it was finished off by the chair.

Lead glass weighing in at 140 g. (~ 5 oz.). An excellent glass of its type with excellent provenance.

Georgian wine glasses featuring twist stems typically date from the 18th century, incorporating intricate air, opaque, or colour twist techniques within the stem created by master glassmakers.

These drinking vessels were traditionally made using lead glass or soda glass, often incorporating coloured glass threads or enamel within the stem to produce the characteristic twist design.

Authentic pieces often display pontil marks on the underside of the foot, minor surface inclusions, and wear consistent with age, alongside specific stem manufacturing techniques characteristic of the period.

Displaying antique stemware within a glazed cabinet or on a dedicated bar cart allows the fine glasswork to serve as a focal point while protecting the fragile object.

Historic glass should be hand washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing or dishwashers to prevent damage to the delicate material.
