Butter dishes with dedicated serving knives were prominent additions to formal dining tables during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, designed to keep butter chilled and cleanly portioned at the table.

These items typically combine sterling silver or silver plate for the structural frame and liner rim with cut or frosted glass for the base bowl, often paired with a matching metal knife.

Authentic pieces often feature makers marks, hallmarks, or EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) stamps on the base, alongside traditional manufacturing indicators such as hand-cut glass liners and soldered joints.

These metallic serving pieces can be utilised as functional tableware on a dining table or repurposed on a sideboard as a decorative container for small trinkets and accessories.

Silver plate should be cleaned using a specialist non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to avoid scratching the surface, while glass liners can be washed in warm soapy water.
