Mid-19th century French silver represents a peak in decorative metalwork, often characterised by high-purity silver standards such as the 950 standard, which contained a higher silver content than sterling silver.

These items were crafted primarily from high-purity silver, often featuring hand-chased or engraved surface details, cast terminals, and detailed floral or scroll motifs executed by master silversmiths.

Authentic pieces are identified by makers marks, such as punch marks containing the silversmiths initials and symbol, alongside official French guarantee marks denoting the silver purity.

Antique silver serving pieces can be displayed on sideboards, within glazed cabinets, or used functionally during formal dining occasions to introduce historic metallic textures to a tablescape.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the natural oxidisation from engraved crevices.
