Description

A Scottish George III elm stool

Nice thing, old and quite rare. Elm is very susceptible to worm and this stool has had some superficial damage in its history, hence the price.

Structurally sound, the upholstery is supported by a board rather than webbed, see images.

Available for collection, but could also be posted potentially at cost price.

The George III period spanned from 1760 to 1820, encompassing various design influences from Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton, characterised by refined proportions, classical motifs, and expert craftsmanship using native and exotic timbers.

Period stools were typically constructed using locally sourced hardwoods such as elm, oak, or mahogany, featuring mortise and tenon joints, stretcher bases for stability, and traditional hand-woven or upholstered drop-in seats.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age-appropriate wear, hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, and historic patination on the wooden surfaces, distinguishing them from modern reproductions.

An antique wooden stool functions effectively as a versatile accent piece, serving as a low side table next to a sofa, a vanity seat in a bedroom, or an organic textural contrast in a minimalist modern scheme.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
