Enamelling on precious metals involves fusing powdered glass to a metal surface through high-temperature firing, a decorative technique that gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods for adding vibrant colour to fine silverware.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver or silver plate, featuring hand-painted vitreous enamel bowls or handles created through meticulous artisanal firing processes.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks for silver purity and maker marks, alongside checking the enamel for the soft patina, minor imperfections, and depth characteristic of older hand-crafted production methods.

Enamel tableware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, arranged on vintage silver trays as part of a tablescape, or framed as miniature works of art to add colour and historical texture to modern dining spaces.

Antique enamel should be cleaned gently using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemical silver dips or abrasive cloths that can scratch both the delicate glass surface and the underlying silver metal.
