Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Brass bayonet lamp holder: electrical fittings that fix the piece to the twentieth century.
Segmented radial construction on the urn: joinery methods used in the interwar years.
Rubbed gilding along raised carvings: steady wear from decades of domestic cleaning.
Carved acanthus and swag details: neoclassical revival styling popular in the 1930s.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This enormous table lamp dates from 1930 in the grand Regency Neoclassical style. Constructed from walnut with parcel gilding, it presents a warm brown timber colour combined with bright gold leaf highlights and a brass lamp holder with a metal harp frame. The design incorporates an architectural column with an Ionic capital and a fluted shaft, set above a heavy carved urn base embellished with foliate garlands and raised rectangular mouldings. Signs of age appear in the gently distressed finish where the gold leaf catches the contours of the carving. Measuring 89 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 31 cm deep, this substantial lighting piece functions effectively on a large sideboard top, console table, or wide desk in a spacious living room, hallway, or study. It provides both ambient illumination and a strong sculptural focal point within a traditional or transitional interior scheme.

Neoclassical carved table lamps incorporate architectural motifs from ancient Greek and Roman design, such as fluted columns, acanthus leaves, and ionic capitals. Popularised in Western Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these lamps often feature parcel-gilt timber constructions crafted to mimic classical stone monuments.

Historically, dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and beech were carved by hand to form the structural base. Fine leaf gilding was applied using traditional water or oil techniques over a prepared gesso ground, with brass fittings integrated for electrical components.

Authentic carved wooden lamps display hand-tool marks, natural timber grain variations, and age-consistent wear to the gilding where the underlying gesso or bole shows through. Original brass electrical socket mountings and historical surface patina further indicate age.

A substantial carved wooden lamp functions as a visual focal point when positioned atop a modern sideboard, console, or side table. Pairing the ornate carved timber base with a clean, neutral linen shade balances classical detail with contemporary minimalism.

Dust the timber and gilded surfaces gently using a dry, soft brush or dry microfibre cloth without liquid polish or chemical solutions. Position the lamp away from direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture to prevent the wood from warping and the gilding from flaking.
