A caddy spoon is a small, specialised utensil designed specifically for measuring loose-leaf tea from a caddy into a teapot. During the Georgian era, tea was an expensive commodity, making these ornate spoons both practical tools and status symbols.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as hand-raising, stamping, and intricate bright-cut engraving or piercing by skilled silversmiths.

Authentic pieces feature clear hallmarks stamped into the metal, usually including the makers mark, standard mark, assay office mark, and date letter, alongside characteristic period wear and patination.

Antique silver spoons can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, mounted in shadow boxes, or arranged on decorative trays alongside other period objects to add historical texture to a modern space.

Preserve antique silver by gently washing it in warm water with mild soap, drying it with a soft microfibre cloth, and avoiding harsh abrasive polishes that can wear away historic engraving and hallmarks.
