Ottoman stools gained widespread popularity during the 19th century as domestic comfort became a priority in interior design, often serving dual purposes as footrests and casual seating in drawing rooms.

These pieces typically feature a hardwood or satinwood frame, traditional hand-tied coil springs, horsehair or wool stuffing, and hand-tufted button upholstery resting on turned wooden legs with castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned timber components showing natural ageing, traditional upholstery techniques underneath, and solid brass castors rather than modern steel replacements.

Positioning a period upholstered stool in a contemporary living space introduces rich texture and historical contrast, working effectively as a coffee table alternative when topped with a wooden tray or placed at the end of a sofa.

Maintain the fabric using gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, protect the timber frame with microcrystalline wax, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and excessive heat fluctuations to prevent wood splitting and textile degradation.
