This antique Yomut Turkmen main carpet dates to circa 1880 and exemplifies Turkmen tribal style. Made of wool with a rich brown and terracotta red ground colour and abrash at the top end, the piece is decorated with a repeating diamond dyrnak gul motif, a curl leaf geometric border, and large elem end panels filled with a tree design. Additional visible details include cream, blue, and orange accents within the guls, even wear across a medium pile, and fringed ends. The rug measures 305 cm high, 200 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. It is suitable for normal domestic use on the floor of a study, hallway, or living room.

Yomut Turkmen carpets originate from nomadic weavers in Central Asia and are characterised by deep terracotta, red, or dark brown grounds patterned with repeating geometric tribal medallions known as guls.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the warp, weft, and pile, dyed with natural vegetable and insect dyes, and bound with high knot counts to create durable, dense floor coverings.

Authentic 19th-century examples display natural dye Abrash variations, soft handle wool warps, specific tribal emblems such as the Dyrnak or Kepse gul, and signs of genuine age-related oxidisation.

Tribal carpets provide visual weight and geometric structure, making them effective for grounding neutral modern schemes, pairing with dark wood furniture, or adding texture to contemporary minimalist interiors.

Maintenance requires regular low-suction vacuuming without a rotating beat-bar, immediate blotting of spills using pH-neutral water, periodic rotation to equalise wear, and professional specialist cleaning.
