Size: 12ft 4in x 8ft 5in (375 x 256cm).

Antique Afghan Ersari Turkmen carpet with traditional Ersari large gul design and unique Taghan tree border.

Circa 1900.

The carpet as two vertical rows of five large Ersari octagonal guls; note the inner main border with the repeat tree design; this is unique to the Taghan sub tribe of the Ersari who settled in Northern Afghanistan. The carpet is of a very pleasing soft warm madder red colour with the design in indigo blue.

The carpet is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, this is a superb furnishing carpet that is ideal for a living or dining room.

The carpet is suitable for heavy domestic floor use.

Ersari carpets are hand-woven textiles produced by the Ersari tribe, one of the major groups of the Turkmen confederation residing primarily in Northern Afghanistan and along the Amu Darya river basin. Historically woven for nomadic use as floor coverings and tent furnishings, these carpets are distinguished by their geometric motifs, robust wool pile, and deep madder red colour palette.

Traditional Ersari carpets are constructed using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the underlying warp and weft foundation. The pile is secured using asymmetric (Persian) knots, creating a dense, durable surface finished with natural vegetable dyes derived from roots, insects, and plants.

Authentic Ersari rugs can be identified by their repeating octagonal main motifs, known as guls, set against a deep red or terracotta field.
