Size: 10ft 1in x 7ft 2in (307 x 219cm).

Antique Kizyl Ayak Ersari Turkmen main carpet with the ‘tauk nuska’ ’ gul design; each segment of the gul contains two double headed birds or horned animal.

Circa 1870.

The carpet has a soft madder red / brown ground colour with some very nice shades of blue and soft yellow in the guls. The boarder is a very well drawn example of the classic Kizil Ayak bird design, note how the border at the ends is different to the sides.

The carpet is in very good condition with even wear and medium pile.

The carpet is suitable for light domestic use.

The carpet has been hand washed and is ready for use.

Ersari Turkmen main carpets were woven by the nomadic Ersari tribe along the Amu Darya river basin in Central Asia during the nineteenth century. Serving as central floor coverings inside traditional yurts, these carpets showcased specific tribal heraldic emblems called guls, which identified clan lineage and cultural heritage.

These carpets were constructed entirely by hand using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation. The wool was dyed using natural plant and insect dyes, such as madder root for deep red and terracotta shades, before being knotted on vertical looms using asymmetric or symmetric knotting techniques.

Authentic pieces feature natural dye variations known as abrash, soft hand-spun wool, and flexible wool foundations rather than rigid cotton backings. They display traditional geometric guls, such as the Tauk Nuska pattern, with precise repeating symmetry and detailed geometric border bands.
