Description

Size: 4ft 11in x 3ft 9in (150 x 114cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen Ensi of classic design with excellent colour.

2nd half 19th century.

Ensi are considered to be traditional ceremonial door hangings for the entrance to the tribal yurt. They also can be used as small floor rugs.

This example is very finely woven with very clear colours, the large double elem panels at the base are beautifully drawn with flowers in the lower panel and large trees in the panel above.

Good condition with slight even wear and good pile.

Hand washed and ready for use or display. This ensi would make a superb wall hanging. A good example of an older age than most that are seen in the market today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Ensi is a specific style of hand-knotted rug produced by nomadic Turkmen tribes, traditionally woven to serve as a protective doorway curtain for a yurt or tent.

Tekke Turkmen rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using locally sourced wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation, coloured with natural plant and insect dyes.

Authentic pieces feature a distinct four-panel central field divided by a cross or hatchli layout, tight symmetrical knotting, a palette dominated by terracotta reds, and a decorative lower skirt called an elem.

Interior designers often place geometric tribal rugs against neutral hardwood flooring, beneath dark wood furniture, or mount them on walls as decorative textile art.

Care involves regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar, using a high-quality rug pad beneath to prevent fiber strain, and professional hand-cleaning when necessary.
