Description

A delightful pair of Victorian Aesthetic Movement low candlesticks c1870. The candlesticks stand on square bases with a fluted stem rising to cylindrical sconces. The base is decorated around the edges with an intricate part geometric and part floral design in copper, against a stippled background. Each corner is adorned with a copper band, topped by a brass half sphere and a very delicate lattice band. The sconces repeat the theme with a larger geometric copper design over the stippled background. The candlesticks are quite heavy and sturdy for their height, suggested the stem is solid brass. In excellent condition, unusual and a disply of skilled craftsmanship.

The Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century prioritised visual and sensory qualities over narrative or moral themes, often incorporating stylized natural motifs, Japanese influences, and mixed metals.

These pieces were typically cast in brass and copper components, frequently utilizing sand-casting methods followed by hand-finishing, chasing, and assembly via threaded fittings or brazing.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct construction methods such as casting seams, patination appropriate for age, patinated screw threads, and design motifs consistent with historical design catalogs of the 1870s and 1880s.

They provide metallic warmth and historical contrast when placed on modern sideboards, minimalist mantelpieces, or bookshelves, pairing effectively with neutral tones and organic textures.

Maintenance should be limited to dusting with a soft, dry cloth to preserve the historical patina, avoiding harsh commercial chemical dips or abrasive polishes that strip surface oxidation.
