Engine turning is a mechanical decorative technique using a rose engine or straight-line machine to engrave intricate, precise geometric patterns into metal, which became highly popular during the Victorian era for silverware and decorative objects.

These mugs were typically crafted from sterling silver using methods such as raising from a flat sheet of metal, casting for handles, and applying hand-chasing or machine-led engine turning for surface decoration.

Authenticity is verified through hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, date letter, makers mark, and silver purity standard, alongside examining the craftsmanship, weight, and natural ageing characteristics of the silver.

An antique silver mug can be integrated into contemporary spaces as a functional decorative object, such as a desktop pen holder, a shelf display piece, or a vase for small botanical arrangements to add metallic contrast.

Preserve antique silver by storing it in a low-humidity environment, handling it with clean hands or cotton gloves, and cleaning it sparingly with specialised silver polish only when necessary to protect the patina.
