Art Deco was named after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925. It was the successor to and a reaction against art nouveau. Seen in furniture, pottery, textiles, jewellery, and glass it was also a notable style of cinema and hotel architecture.

Its chief difference from art nouveau is the influence of cubism which gives art deco design generally a more fragmented, geometric character. However, imagery based on plant forms, and sinuous curves remained in some art deco design, for example that of Clarice Cliff.

Art deco also varied in its influences, taking inspiration from ancient Egyptian art, Aztec and other ancient Central American art. It also drew on the modern architecture and design of the Bauhaus, and of architects such as Le Corbusier and Mies van de Rohe.

Art Deco design emerged in France during the 1910s and flourished internationally during the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by geometric symmetry, stylised motifs, and sleek metallic finishes.

Such items were typically produced using a base metal such as brass, copper, or Britannia metal, which was then electroplated with a layer of pure silver and finished with hand-engraved or applied decorative bands.

Authenticity is verified by examining makers marks and hallmarks stamped into the base or rim, alongside traditional manufacturing methods such as heavy-gauge plating and cast handles rather than modern stamped construction.

This piece can be styled functionally on a bar cart or displayed as a decorative metallic accent on a sideboard to add reflective texture and historical contrast to modern spaces.

Items should be washed gently in warm water with mild, non-abrasive soap and dried thoroughly, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the silver layer and instead using specialised silver polish sparingly.
