A rushlight is a type of primitive lighting device used primarily during the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. Dried rushes were peeled to leave a single pith, soaked in animal fat or grease, and then clamped into the spring-loaded jaws of the iron holder to provide a dim, temporary indoor light.

Rushlights are traditionally hand-forged by blacksmiths using wrought iron. They typically feature a spring pincer mechanism at the top to grip the rush, a weighted base or tripod legs for stability, and sometimes an integrated candle socket on the opposing arm.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of genuine hand-forging, such as irregular tool marks, hand-filed surfaces, period-appropriate oxidisation, and deep pitting consistent with centuries of aging. Modern reproductions often display uniform machine tooling, artificial aging, or incorrect gauge metal.

An antique rushlight serves as an exceptional sculptural object for a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table. Its minimalist, industrial silhouette integrates well into rustic, dark academia, or minimalist schemes as a tactile conversation piece.

Preservation requires keeping the iron dry and stable in a low-humidity environment to prevent active corrosion. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and occasionally apply a microcrystalline wax to protect the historic surface without altering the patina.
