This Georgian Old Sheffield plated wirework basket dates to 1800. The piece is crafted from silver and copper in a silver colour scheme, standing on four small ball feet and featuring a rectangular base with a gadrooned rim, an open flaring wirework gallery, and ornate cast shell motif handles at either end. Visible details include copper bleeding through the silver plating on the wirework and raised edges, along with a smooth polished interior basin. The basket measures 10 cm high, 29 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Suitable for use in a modern home, this item provides a classic display accent or decorative container for a dining table center or a side sideboard in an English country house interior setting.

FAQs

Invented in the 1740s by Thomas Boulsover, Old Sheffield Plate is a manufacturing process where a thin layer of sterling silver is fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets and worked into tableware items.

Antique wirework baskets were crafted by drawing silver-plated copper wire through dies and forming the individual strands into openwork galleries, which were then soldered onto a solid silver-plated base and structural rim.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate typically features drawn wire construction with visible copper bleeding along edges or high points where the silver layer has worn, as well as distinct folded seams or inset silver shields.

Display the piece as a central decorative accent on a dining table or sideboard, filling it with dry botanicals, fruit, or placing it unadorned to highlight its graphic wirework structure.

Wash gently in warm soapy water using a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or aggressive rubbing which can permanently wear away the thin layer of fused silver and expose the copper core.
