FAQs

Imari porcelain originates from the town of Arita in Japan, exported from the port of Imari since the Edo period, and became highly sought after in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, later inspiring Victorian reproductions.

Imari pieces are crafted from fine ceramic clay, hand-painted underglaze in cobalt blue and overglaze in iron red, often highlighted with gilt details before being fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-painted brushwork with slight imperfections, traditional Japanese motifs, crazing in the glaze consistent with age, and sometimes maker marks on the underside.

These pieces can be mounted on walls as a focal point, displayed upright in a cabinet, or placed on plate stands on a sideboard to add colour and historical texture to a room.

Antique porcelain should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent when necessary, avoiding abrasive sponges, dishwashers, and direct prolonged sunlight to protect the surface glazes.
