This circular Regency tea caddy originates from the nineteenth century, dating around 1820. Made from Old Sheffield Plate, the piece combines a silver finish with warm copper bleed visible along the raised rope-twist trim and reed-edged borders. The cylindrical body displays a tight, fitted cap lid topped with a matching small cylindrical finial, alongside minor surface dimples and light marks. The construction incorporates decorative gadrooned rope-twist mouldings encircling the rim of the lid, the base of the lid, the upper shoulder, and the lower base. The vessel measures 12.5 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item suits placement on a sideboard top to serve as an ornamental tabletop accessory or a functional container. Its classic Regency styling integrates easily into traditional dining rooms or living spaces, adding period character to surface displays.

An Old Sheffield Plated tea caddy is a storage container crafted using a process invented in the 18th century where a layer of sterling silver was fused to copper before shaping. Used to store loose tea leaves, these containers were central to British tea-drinking rituals during the Georgian and Regency periods.

Regency caddies were typically made by hammering or rolling fused silver and copper sheets into cylindrical, oval, or rectangular forms. They featured fitted lids to create an airtight seal, often adorned with gadrooned or rope-twist borders, and sometimes lined with tin or lead foil to preserve the aroma of the tea.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate often exhibits a soft colour warmth distinct from electroplate, alongside visible copper bleed where the silver coating has thinned at raised edges or seams. Additionally, authentic pieces from the era often lack standard sterling hallmarks, featuring either blank surfaces or makers symbols pressed into the metal.

An antique silver tea caddy functions well on a dining room sideboard, kitchen shelving, or a gentlemans library desk. Its metallic texture provides contrast against dark wood, marble surfaces, or modern matte ceramics.

Clean Old Sheffield Plate gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to avoid removing the thin layer of silver. Avoid harsh chemicals, immersion in water, or aggressive rubbing on areas where copper exposure is already visible.
