FAQs

A campaign chest is a type of modular furniture designed to be easily dismantled and transported by military officers during the British colonial era. These pieces featured recessed brass handles and corner brackets to protect the wood from damage during frequent travels.

Campaign trunks are traditionally constructed from durable timbers such as camphor wood, teak, or mahogany, chosen for their resilience to humidity and insects. Construction typically incorporates dovetail joints, brass strapwork, and reinforced corners to withstand rigorous transport.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-beaten or cast brass hardware with slot-head screws, and the characteristic aromatic scent of genuine camphor wood. Age-related patina, such as minor dents, oxidisation on the brass, and shrinkage cracks, also indicates genuine age.

A campaign chest functions effectively as a coffee table in a living room, providing both surface area and concealed interior storage. It can also be placed at the end of a bed or serve as an accent piece in a study to introduce texture and historical character.

Preserve the finish by keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and occasionally apply a neutral beeswax to nourish the timber without harming the antique patina.
