Engine turning is a decorative technique in which a precise geometric pattern is mechanically engraved into a metal surface using a specialized lathe, commonly found on mid-century silver accessories.

These frames typically feature a sterling silver front plate mounted over a wooden or card core, fitted with a fabric backing such as velvet or moire silk, and supported by a hinged wooden or metal strut.

Authentic pieces bear official assay office hallmarks stamped into the silver, denoting the metal standard, the town of origin, and the date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

An antique silver frame adds refined metallic texture when displayed on a wooden desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf, contrasting well against contemporary decor.

Clean the silver gently using a non-abrasive microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding contact with any fabric backing or paper inserts to prevent staining.
