Description

A beautiful and very well made antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany piano duet stool. This was made in England, it dates from the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is excellent this has a gorgeous and very useful design. Designed for duets at a piano, this is very useful as a storage bench for an entry way, window seat or even at the foot of a bed. There is fine and intricate inlay of various woods on the front, back and corners. The front and back are finished identically, so it can be used as a free standing item. The upholstered seat lifts up to reveal a useful storage compartment, this has brass feet caps with brass casters.

We have had this re-polished and the seat has been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor wear beneath the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, often lighter and less ornate than Victorian pieces, frequently draws inspiration from earlier 18th-century designs such as Sheraton and Hepplewhite.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or satinwood, often featuring intricate marquetry or line inlay using contrasting timbers, alongside upholstered seat pads.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional polishing techniques like shellac or french polish, and genuine brass castors rather than modern reproductions.

Such versatile items function effectively as piano seating, dressing table benches, or compact window seats, adding warmth and historical character to modern rooms.

Maintenance involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the polished surface.
