FAQs

Altar sticks are tall candle holders traditionally used on ecclesiastical altars in churches and chapels during liturgical services, dating back centuries with designs evolving through the Baroque and Gothic periods.

These items were typically hand-carved from dense woods such as oak, pine, or fruitwood, often finished with gesso, paint, or gilding to emulate more expensive materials like bronze or solid gold.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks from hand-carving, natural ageing of the wood and gesso, historical patina, wear patterns around the base, and traditional joinery methods appropriate to the stated century.

They can be displayed on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece to introduce height, architectural texture, and a sense of historical narrative to modern or transitional rooms.

Preserve these artefacts by dusting gently with a dry, soft brush, keeping them away from direct sunlight, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent cracking of the wood and flaking of any historic surface finishes.
