Hanau silver refers to items produced by German silversmiths, notably during the late 19th century, who specialised in creating revivalist pieces styled after older European silverwork, frequently for the export market.

These scent flasks were typically crafted from high-grade sterling or continental silver, utilising techniques such as repousse, chasing, and embossing to create highly detailed figural and floral designs.

Authentic pieces often feature maker marks such as those for Simon Rosenau alongside pseudo-marks or official British import hallmark stamps, which indicate the metal standard and the year of entry into the UK.

These small decorative objects can be displayed on a vanity tray, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled upon a dressing table alongside other vintage silver accessories.

Preservation involves storing pieces in a low-humidity environment and cleaning them sparingly with a soft cloth to avoid damaging the delicate repousse detail or removing desirable historic patina.
