Scent bottles from the 19th century were essential personal accessories used to combat unpleasant odours and revive individuals suffering from faintness due to tight corsetry. They were frequently carried in chatelaines or fitted vanity cases.

These pieces typically combined hand-blown or mould-pressed coloured glasssuch as ruby, cranberry, or cobaltwith hallmarked sterling silver, gilt metal, or occasionally glass stoppers protected by ornate metal screw caps.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hallmarks on the metal mounts, the hand-cut facets or blow-pontil marks on the glass, and the overall wear consistent with age and handling.

They can be displayed in groups on a mirrored tray atop a dressing table, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or on a mantelpiece to add a touch of historic colour and reflective texture to a room.

Clean the glass gently using a soft, damp cloth without submerging the metal mounts in harsh liquids, and use specialised silver cloths lightly to maintain the metals natural lustre without removing historical patina.
