This early 20th century folk art footstool dates from 1900 and is constructed entirely from solid oak with a warm brown colour and original polish exhibiting a mellow tone and visible patina. The rectangular top features a bull-nose edge and symmetrical chip carvings consisting of a central rosette enclosed within a lozenge motif, complemented by delicate scrollwork at either end. The piece stands on integrated slab legs with triangular cut-outs at the base, creating a solid support structure without brakes or woodworm. Measuring 15 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 21 cm deep, the footstool serves as a practical accessory for a fireplace hearth or a living room seating area. Its rustic farmhouse aesthetic integrates naturally into traditional and eclectic interiors, providing a functional perch for tired feet or a low display surface for small decorative objects in everyday use.

Folk art furniture refers to vernacular pieces crafted by hand using regional timbers, often featuring carved geometric patterns or decorative motifs reflecting regional crafting traditions.

Solid hardwoods such as oak, elm, or pine were typically utilised, constructed using traditional joints or timber pegs to ensure structural longevity.

Authentic examples showcase hand-carved details with minor structural irregularities, genuine surface wear, and uneven patination along handled edges and base supports.

A carved oak footstool can be positioned near a hearth, positioned beneath a console table, or used as a textured low accent piece alongside upholstered furniture.

Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth and occasional light applications of beeswax polish will maintain the timber finish and preserve its natural surface patina.
