Pique work is a decorative technique involving the inlay of tiny points or patterns of gold, silver, or other metals into tortoiseshell or ivory surfaces, highly popular in 17th and 18th-century European craftsmanship.

These boxes typically combined a base of genuine hawksbill turtle shell with sterling silver mounts, hinges, and intricate inlaid wirework, often lined with silk or velvet.

Authenticity is determined by examining the natural grain and warmth of the shell under magnification, checking for period hallmarks on the silver mounts, and observing the hand-cut nature of the metal inlay.

Place the piece on a mantelpiece, coffee table, or dressing table as a focal point among contemporary art books or alongside modern metallic accents to create a curated display.

Tortoiseshell is sensitive to extreme temperature changes, direct sunlight, and harsh chemicals; it should be kept in a stable environment and cleaned only with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
