This seventeenth century early English country coffer takes the form of a small storage chest shaped from dark brown oak with a plank construction and hand made nail construction. A hinged lid opens on pin hinges above a front bearing a historic split and an original wrought iron lock plate with a hasp, while the base stands on V-cut feet. The piece measures 45 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. Positioned practically at the foot of the bed or within a living space, the chest provides compact storage for blankets or linens while serving as a traditional surface. The visible grain displays an aged character alongside the dark metalwork of the hardware.

Coffers were among the most versatile and ubiquitous items of furniture in mediaeval and early modern households, used primarily for secure storage of valuables, textiles, and documents.

Authentic period coffers were predominantly constructed from heavy native timber such as English oak, utilizing joined frame-and-panel construction and secured with hand-forged iron hardware.

Authentication involves examining tool marks, hand-cut joints, original wrought iron hinges and locks, and the presence of natural patination and wear consistent with age.

This piece can be integrated into contemporary spaces as a functional coffee table, at the foot of a bed, or as a characterful storage solution that introduces tactile warmth and historical contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally treating the wood with traditional beeswax to nourish the surface.
