FAQs

Footstools and low benches have been used in European interiors for centuries, evolving from functional floor cushions to finely crafted wooden frames with elaborate upholstery. French designs historically emphasised graceful curves, carved detailing, and luxurious textiles to complement formal drawing rooms.

Traditional construction typically involves a solid hardwood frame, such as walnut, mahogany, or beech, supporting a hand-tied sprung interior or webbing base. Upholstery materials range from heavy cottons and wools to silks, finished with traditional stuffing like horsehair and secured with decorative brass tacking.

Authentic period pieces can be identified by examining the joinery methods in the wooden frame, the type of hand-forged or brass hardware used on the castors, and the wear patterns on the wooden feet. Hand-turned legs and traditional upholstery techniques, such as twine-stitched edges, indicate older craftsmanship.

An antique footstool works well as a versatile accent piece, serving as an occasional coffee table with a tray placed on top, an ottoman at the end of a bed, or a functional footrest before a sofa. Mixing traditional wooden frames with contemporary neutral surroundings creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the fabric and drying of the wood. Regular gentle vacuuming with an upholstery attachment removes dust, while occasional professional cleaning helps maintain the integrity of delicate textiles.
