Novelty silver pepper shakers gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods when silversmiths began producing whimsical tableware reflecting contemporary interests, military themes, and everyday objects.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver, often utilizing methods such as spinning, casting, and hand-piercing to form the shaker holes and detailed profiles.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks stamped on the metal, which indicate the assay office, date letter, makers mark, and silver standard, alongside assessing the natural patina and wear consistent with age.

These conversational pieces can be placed centrally on a dining table or displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet, adding a touch of historical character and wit to contemporary interior schemes.

Preservation involves gentle cleaning with a specialized micro-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to remove tarnish while safeguarding the underlying metal and historical hallmarks.
