This Edwardian desk lamp dates from circa 1900 and exemplifies the gentleman's library style. The piece combines a heavy dark brown cast iron base with a fluted design and a built-in pen tray, supporting a flexible coiled brass gooseneck arm. At the end sits a white glass shade featuring a distinct ruffled edge and a maker's mark reading Supreme. Additional details visible in the photograph include a visible electric cable coiled near the base and a standard white three-pin plug attached to the wiring. The lamp stands 55 cm high, with the measurement including the shade, and arrives in very good condition with no chips or cracks to the glass following a recent rewiring. This desk lamp suits a home office or study desk setup, providing practical task lighting while adding period character to a workspace.

FAQs

Gooseneck desk lamps originated in the early twentieth century, defined by a flexible coiled metal neck that allows precise directional positioning of light for reading and writing.

These lighting fixtures typically combine flexible brass or steel tubing with heavy cast iron or metal bases for balance, paired with blown or molded glass shades.

Authentic pieces feature weighted cast bases, natural patination across brass surfaces, period-appropriate glass shade fitters, and original flexible coiled tubing rather than modern plastic flex.

Position this lamp on a modern timber desk, side table, or shelving unit to add tactile metalwork and focused task illumination to a study or living area.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, clean the detachable glass shade using warm water, and avoid abrasive chemical cleaners on the aged brass finish.
