A yatate is a small, portable writing instrument used in traditional Japan, consisting of a compartment for ink and a tubular section for holding writing brushes.

Yatate were commonly crafted from metals such as bronze, brass, or iron, often featuring intricate surface decorations including silver or gold inlay and carved details.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit historical patina, traditional hand-forged or cast construction methods, and period-specific decorative motifs consistent with Japanese metalwork.

Such historical objects can be displayed on a dedicated stand within a study, on a bookshelf, or inside a glass cabinet to highlight their intricate craftsmanship.

Preservation involves maintaining a stable indoor environment away from direct moisture, handling with clean cotton gloves, and avoiding abrasive cleaning agents to protect the metal patina.
