Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ormolu refers to gilded bronze, a technique where a finely ground high-carat gold-mercury amalgam is applied to a bronze base. It gained widespread popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries in neoclassical and rococo decorative arts.

Authentic pieces typically consist of a cast bronze base shaped through lost-wax casting or sand casting, followed by manual chasing to sharpen details. The surface is then treated with an acid dip and fire-gilded to achieve its characteristic metallic lustre.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight, casting seam quality, and wear patterns. Genuine antique fire-gilding has a deep, soft golden hue that does not flake like modern electroplate, and the undersides often show hand-tooling marks and appropriate age oxidisation.

These pieces function well as focal points on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or dining table centre. Pairing them with clean-lined modern furnishings creates a striking contrast that highlights their metallic texture and historical craftsmanship.

Maintenance requires only gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Chemical cleaning agents, metal polishes, and abrasives must be avoided entirely, as they strip away the fragile historical gold layer.
