Description

A smart and very well made large antique Victorian mahogany open bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

It is of superb quality and is a useful size. The two open sections each have three adjustable shelves, there are a further two drawers in the lower section.

The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and all round patina, we have just had this re-polished so it is in very good all round condition for its age. There are just various small old marks and indentations here and there beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Width – 60 inches , 153 cm

Depth – 14 inches , 36 cm

Height – 54 inches , 138 cm

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, characterised by a revival of historical epochs, robust construction, and the prominent use of rich timbers such as mahogany and walnut.

Master cabinetmakers typically utilised solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods like pine or oak, employing traditional dovetail joints in drawers and hand-cut joinery for structural stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut dovetails, older patination with natural wax build-up, and timber species consistent with mid-to-late 19th-century trade routes.

Pairing dark, historic wood with contemporary neutral walls creates a striking focal point, while alternating book stacks with sculptural objects and ceramics balances the visual weight.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and periodically feed the wood with microcrystalline wax while avoiding silicone-based polishes.
