Description

A rare form of oil lamp, made from sheet and cast iron, probably used on board ship, hence the three legs and wide drip tray..... it would have been filled with fish / whale oil and then a lighted taper would have gone in the hole in the top of the reservoir....it would have been a delicate light, but quite a smelly form of lighting...! The lamp is in very good original condition and this is the first of this type I have been lucky enough to buy in a very long time...

German / French C1740-60.

An 18th-century whale oil lamp is an early domestic lighting device that utilised rendered marine mammal oil, lard, or grease burned through a textile wick to provide illumination.

These lighting devices were typically constructed from hand-beaten sheet iron, tin, pewter, or brass, featuring welded joints and hand-forged structural components.

Authentic pieces exhibit period manufacturing techniques such as hand-cut components, aged oxidisation, tool marks, and appropriate wear consistent with centuries of handling.

Such pieces function well as sculptural tabletop objects or shelf accents, providing a focal point of industrial history within a curated interior scheme.

Preservation involves maintaining a stable indoor humidity, dusting gently with a dry microfiber cloth, and avoiding chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that might strip historic patina.
