Scottish provincial silver refers to items crafted outside of the main assay offices of Edinburgh and Glasgow, typically in regional towns like Dundee, Aberdeen, and Perth. These pieces are often rarer and highly sought after by collectors due to their distinct makers marks and limited regional production.

Antique spoons from the 18th and 19th centuries were traditionally hand-wrought from sterling silver, typically of a .925 fineness standard. Silversmiths hammered, shaped, and engraved the metal by hand, often incorporating detailed cast or chased motifs such as shells or crests on the terminals.

Authenticity is verified by examining makers marks, town marks, and provincial hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal. Provincial pieces frequently feature unique maker initials combined with regional town punches rather than standard royal assay office marks.

Antique silver can be displayed in glass-fronted cabinets, used within traditional dining table settings, or presented in silver display boxes on sideboards to add historic character and metallic sheen to contemporary spaces.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a non-abrasive silver cloth or a gentle, specialist silver dip designed for antiques. Avoid harsh scrubbing to preserve original hallmarks and patina, and store pieces in tarnish-resistant cloth in low-humidity environments.
