A coffer is a traditional sturdy chest historically used for storing valuables, documents, and textiles, dating back to medieval times when they served as portable furniture.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid oak using frame-and-panel construction, pegged joints, and hand-cut mouldings to accommodate wood movement over centuries.

Authentic pieces display period tool marks, hand-split timber grain, traditional joinery such as trammel points or pegged mortise and tenon, and natural patination rather than modern hardware.

Position the piece at the foot of a bed or as a focal point in a hallway, contrasting the dark timber with neutral textiles or minimalist contemporary surroundings.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically apply natural beeswax to nourish the timber without sealing the pores.
