FAQs

During the Victorian period, advancements in electroplating made sophisticated tableware accessible to a broader demographic. Elaborate serving pieces like strawberry sets became prominent features of formal dining and afternoon tea.

These items typically feature a base metal such as Britannia metal or copper, which was coated in a layer of silver via electroplating. Many pieces also incorporated parcel-gilding, applying a thin gold wash to the interior surfaces for contrast and protection against fruit acids.

Authentic pieces often bear manufacturer stamps, hallmarks, or registration marks on the underside. Examination of the weight, construction joints, and natural wear patterns on the silver plating also aids in determining period authenticity.

Such pieces can be utilised as functional serveware during gatherings or displayed as decorative centrepieces on sideboards and dining tables, adding metallic texture and historical contrast to modern minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Silver plate should be cleaned gently using non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to avoid wearing through the thin silver layer. Storing items in tarnish-resistant cloth and avoiding contact with harsh chemicals or acidic foods for extended periods will maintain their finish.
