Description

Large antique gilt metal flagon lamp in the form of an embossed flagon with many fine details & sitting on an onyx base with gilt feet.

The gilding has a soft gold colour & has been cleaned a bit but still could be cleaned more, if wished. I like it as it is, because it has a nice original look & is full of character. Please enlarge all the details to see all the fine embossed relief work.

We have had this lamp re-wired, so it does work & I would date it to around the 1890-1910 period.

Width – 11.5 inches, 29 cm

Depth – 8.5 inches, 21 cm

Height – 28.5 inches, 72 cm

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Flagon lamps from the antique period often repurpose traditional pouring vessels or draw inspiration from classical urns and ewers, frequently adapted into lighting fixtures during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

These pieces typically feature cast brass or bronze with gilt finishes, often mounted on stone bases such as marble or onyx, and constructed with multi-part fitted components.

Authentication involves examining the wear on the gilding, the presence of period wiring or conversion marks, heavy cast metal construction, and natural ageing of the base materials.

Position the lamp on a console table or sideboard to add height, texture, and a focal point, pairing it with a simple neutral shade to balance the ornate base.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can strip the delicate gilt finish.
