Pocket hip flasks evolved from medieval leather and metal containers, becoming particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries among travellers and sportsmen for carrying spirits discreetly.

Traditional flasks were typically fabricated from sterling silver, pewter, or glass, and frequently encased in leather, crocodile skin, or wicker to provide a secure grip and protect the metal.

Authentic pieces generally feature clear hallmarks indicating the metal purity, makers mark, assay office, and date letter, alongside appropriate signs of age such as patina and minor wear on the leather or skin.

These items make excellent decorative objects when displayed on a bookshelf, desk, or bar cart, adding a layer of tactile texture and historical interest to a room.

Silver components should be gently polished with a specialist cloth, while leather or skin coverings benefit from occasional treatment with neutral conditioning balm to prevent cracking.
