A silver gilt ewer is a pitcher or jug crafted from silver and coated with a thin layer of gold, historically used for pouring water during ritual hand-washing or as a decorative display piece and presentation trophy.

These pieces are typically manufactured from sterling silver or silver plate, then fire-gilded or electrogilt, often featuring cast figural handles, chased ornamentation, and mounted wooden bases.

Authentic pieces are identified by examining makers marks, hallmarks indicating purity and assay office, weight, and the natural wear patterns of the gilding over base silver.

It can be displayed as a focal point on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or glass-fronted cabinet, contrasting against dark wood or minimalist surfaces to highlight its metallic sheen and sculptural form.

Preservation requires avoiding abrasive polishes that strip the thin gold layer, using specialized silver care products sparingly, and maintaining stable humidity levels to prevent tarnishing.
