FAQs

Georgian furniture spans the reigns of the first four British monarchs named George, from 1714 to 1830. This era evolved through distinct design phases, moving from heavy walnut influences to the refined elegance of mahogany, heavily influenced by master cabinetmakers such as Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite.

Authentic Georgian chests predominantly utilise dense tropical hardwoods like mahogany, often paired with secondary softwoods for internal drawer linings such as oak or pine. Construction features hand-cut dovetail joints on both the carcase and drawer boxes, along with pegged mortise and tenon joints.

Authentication relies on examining timber grain, patination, and construction markers. Hand-cut dovetails, asymmetrical tool marks from saws and planes, original backboards, and period brass hardware without modern screw types indicate genuine age.

Pairing dark timber period pieces with modern neutral walls and minimalist lighting creates a balanced scheme. The rich warmth of mahogany contrasts effectively against contemporary textures, serving as a functional focal point in living spaces or bedrooms.

Maintain mahogany furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Clean surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and apply traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the wood and preserve its natural lustre.
