Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Slotted brass hinge screws: standard Victorian ironmongery.
Faux-oak painted graining: decorative scumble finish popular in the 1860s.
Wide tongue-and-groove pine backboards: mid-nineteenth-century cabinetmaking.
Subtle distortion across the panes: hand-blown cylinder glass.
Breakfront cornice and panelled pilasters: architectural library proportions.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large four door bookcase cupboard dates from 1860 in the English Country style, made from pine with glass panels and finished in a warm yellow paint. The piece includes four upper glazed doors with adjustable interior shelving and a moulded cornice, set above a lower base of four panelled cupboards with vertical moulding details. Visible construction elements comprise distinct vertical fluting on the outer cabinet posts and stepped cornices along the top edge. It measures 255 cm high, 237 cm wide and 47 cm deep, separating into two sections for transport. Suitable for residential interiors, this storage cabinet functions effectively in a living room, study or dining room for books and display items. The upper glass-fronted section allows for organized presentation, while the lower panelled doors conceal bulkier household items. Practical placement requires a substantial wall space to accommodate the full width and height of the structure within a traditional domestic setting.

A four-door library bookcase typically features an upper section with glazed doors for protecting books and a lower enclosed cupboard base for hidden storage. Emerging in the 18th and 19th centuries, these substantial pieces were designed for private libraries and grand residences.

Antique painted bookcases were often constructed from pine or secondary hardwoods, featuring hand-dovetailed drawers, mortise-and-tenon frame joinery, and mouth-blown glass panes. Finishes often included faux-graining, scumble glazing, or paint applied directly to the timber.

Original pieces typically exhibit hand-cut joinery, irregular thickness in original glass panes, and surface wear consistent with age around door handles and bases. The back panels often show hand-sawn timber boards with visible tool marks and historic hardware.

A large painted bookcase serves as an architectural anchor in a living room, dining room, or home office. It can be styled by pairing curated literature with ceramic vessels across the upper shelves while utilising the lower cupboards for concealed organisation.

Dust the painted surfaces regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid chemical sprays that may degrade historic paint layers. Glass panels should be cleaned using a mild solution applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame to protect surrounding wood finishes.
