Sold 30 May 2025 · Beech and Springs Antiques
This “1920'S Western Canadian Cedar Trunk” found a buyer.

It was listed by Beech and Springs Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A 1920's Western Canadian Cedar Trunk. The trunk is beautifully made with tongue and groove corners. At the front is a brass lock (sorry we have no key). Metal handles sit on both sides for ease of moving.

Cedar was used a lot in trunk making; as it repels moths, so a cedar trunk was very useful for storing wool and delicate fabrics.

Cedar chests and blanket boxes have been used for centuries across North America and Europe to store textiles, linens, and woollens, prized particularly for cedars natural ability to repel moths and insects.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid aromatic cedar or pine, frequently utilising finger joints, dovetailing, or reinforced corners to ensure durability and strength.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate brass or iron hardware, and natural wood patina consistent with age, rather than modern machine-made fasteners.

A wooden chest can be positioned at the foot of a bed or utilised as a coffee table, providing both functional storage and natural texture to a room scheme.

Maintain the timber by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, applying occasional applications of natural beeswax to nourish the wood surface.
