Description

This is a William IV/early Victorian, mouth-blown, engraved Bristol blue glass mell decanter and stopper dating from the early to mid 19th century, c1835/1840.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 180 years of use. There is a polished out pontil mark to the underside of the base.

The decanter has been mouth-blown in Bristol blue glass and has been engraved with a trailing, fruiting vine to the body of the decanter. The decanter measures 16 cm (6.4 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The decanter is 20 cm (8 inches) in height without the stopper and 24 cm (9.6 inches) in height to the top of the stopper when inserted. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration.

There is a Bristol blue solid mushroom form stopper of the correct style that comes with the decanter. It is probably the original being of the same metal, colour and an excellent fit. It has a polished out pontil mark to the top.

A very nice looking decanter weighing in at 620 g. (~ 1 lb. 6 oz.).

Bristol blue glass is a distinctively deep cobalt-blue glassware produced in Bristol, England, particularly during the late 18th and 19th centuries, prized for its rich colour achieved by adding cobalt oxide to the glass mix.

These pieces were mouth-blown using potash glass formulas, featuring hand-ground stoppers and often embellished with wheel-engraving or gilt decoration applied by skilled artisans.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit pontil marks on the base from hand-blowing, minor surface wear consistent with age, hand-ground stoppers unique to the neck, and slight imperfections in the glass structure.

Coloured glassware can be displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or mantels to catch natural light, creating a vibrant focal point that contrasts with neutral modern surfaces.

Clean antique glass gently with lukewarm water and mild detergent using a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive scourers, and sudden temperature changes to protect the fragile surface.
