Description

Antique banker's desk lamps are becoming difficult to find, especially if they retain, as in this Edwardian brass example, their original lacquered surface, green glass shade, and fitments. Of course, after a hundred years of handling, this delicate protective layer of tinted lacquer becomes worn and discoloured, the shade has attracted a few minor imperfections, and the bass supports are not so uniformly shaped as they once were. However, these exentiricities, add to a lamp's character and visual appeal. Desk lamps provide not only a subtle source of light within the study but also a focal point for building a period or contemporary interior setting. This lamp has been rewired using a sympathetic-coloured braided cord and safety tested. The measurements below include the shade - the diameter of the base on its own is 15.5 cm.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The bankers lamp, historically known as the Emeralite, originated in the early 20th century and was designed to reduce eye strain for accountants, bankers, and office workers by diffusing a focused downward light through a distinctive green glass shade.

Authentic period desk lamps are typically constructed from heavy brass bases, often featuring weighted iron interiors for stability, paired with mouth-blown flashed glass shades in characteristic green or white cased glass.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the casting quality of the brass, the presence of maker marks or patent stamps, hand-blown imperfections in the glass shade, and period-appropriate wiring components such as brass turn-key switches.

This piece works effectively as a task light on a timber home office desk or as a contrasting accent light on a sideboard, bringing traditional character and focused illumination to modern workspaces.

Maintain the finish by dusting the brass with a soft, dry cloth rather than using harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina, and clean the glass shade gently with warm soapy water while avoiding submerge-cleaning electrical components.
